ADDCharge Energy: 11kV and 33kV independent connection provider

NERS-accredited ICP delivery for 11kV and 33kV grid connections, coordinated from feasibility and connection strategy through design, civils, HV installation, energisation and adoption.

A coordinated approach to complex grid connections

Securing power for a high-demand site is far more than an electrical installation. Network capacity, point of connection, technical approvals, land rights, equipment lead times, civil works and the final energisation sequence all determine when a project can become operational.

ADDCharge Energy combines NERS-accredited ICP services with the wider electrical and construction capabilities of its sister company, ADDCharge. Together, they can provide HV and LV electrical installation, civil engineering and structural steelwork, delivered by one team.

Whether the connection is at 11kV or 33kV, we develop a practical, buildable route from the local distribution network to the equipment the connection is there to power.

Our 11kV and 33kV independent connection provider (ICP) services

Feasibility and connection strategy

ADDCharge Energy reviews present and future demand, load profile and resilience requirements alongside site constraints, potential routes and 11kV vs 33kV implications.

  • Present and future demand, load profile and resilience requirements
  • Site constraints, potential routes and 11kV vs 33kV implications
  • DNO and IDNO options, risks, budget allowances and programme drivers
  • Connection strategy that takes account of EV charging, BESS, solar PV and future expansion

Applications and stakeholder coordination

ADDCharge Energy coordinates the connection application and technical information, managing interfaces with the host DNO, selected IDNO and other stakeholders.

  • Connection application and technical information
  • Point-of-connection data, adoption requirements, metering and legal information
  • Host DNO, selected IDNO and other stakeholder interfaces
  • Actions, approvals and dependencies against the route to energisation

Adoptable electrical and civil design

ADDCharge Energy coordinates adoptable electrical and civil design for the approved connection route.

  • HV cable network and substation design for the approved route
  • Switchgear, transformer, protection, earthing and metering coordination
  • Cable routes, ducts, joint bays, chambers, substation bases and associated civils
  • Design submissions, comments resolution and construction information

Construction and installation

ADDCharge Energy coordinates the civil and electrical construction required for the approved connection route.

  • Site surveys, service avoidance and pre-construction planning
  • Excavation, trenching, ducting, bases, joint bays and reinstatement
  • HV plant, transformers, switchgear and cable installation within approved NERS scope
  • Coordination with private HV network, LV distribution and charging infrastructure

Testing, energisation, adoption and handover

ADDCharge Energy coordinates testing, energisation readiness, adoption documentation and final handover.

  • Inspection, testing and commissioning of connection assets and downstream infrastructure
  • Coordination of witness testing, energisation readiness and final network interfaces
  • As-built drawings, test records, O&M information and adoption pack
  • Final handover aligned with IDNO/DNO requirements and site go-live

Grid connection delivery routes

The appropriate delivery route depends on the connection, adoption requirements and the boundary between the adopted network and the site’s private HV/LV infrastructure.

DNO-delivered connection

The regional DNO designs and delivers the connection works and retains the assets. ADDCharge Energy coordinates the customer’s downstream HV/LV, civils and operational interfaces around the DNO programme.

ICP with DNO adoption

An accredited ICP delivers permitted contestable works to DNO standards for adoption. ADDCharge Energy designs and constructs the agreed contestable scope and coordinates approvals, testing and handover within NERS scope. The host DNO retains the non-contestable activities, with the exact division of responsibilities determined by the host DNO and project.

    ICP with IDNO adoption

The ICP delivers the network for adoption and long-term operation by an IDNO. ADDCharge Energy coordinates the connection, design, inspections, legal information, asset transfer and site delivery with the selected IDNO partner. Where an IDNO asset-value payment applies, this should be considered alongside design conditions, legal requirements, programme, ownership boundary and whole-project cost.

Adopted network + private HV network

The adopted network ends at an agreed boundary, with the customer’s private HV/LV system supplying site assets. ADDCharge Energy coordinates both sides of the boundary so protection, metering, earthing, plant, civils and energisation responsibilities are clear.

11kV or 33kV – what determines the connection voltage?

11kV and 33kV are not interchangeable package options. There is no one-size-fits-all megawatt threshold. The correct voltage is established through the network connection offer and coordinated design.

What affects the cost and programme?

There is no standard price or delivery period. Two projects of similar capacity can differ significantly because of network, land, route and operational constraints.

    Standards and credentials

ADDCharge Energy is NERS accredited for defined contestable-connection activities. We deliver projects within the scopes of our current LRQA registration and confirm the applicable scope before contract award.

    FAQs

What is an Independent Connection Provider?

An ICP is a company accredited under the National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS) to undertake approved contestable elements of a new or modified electricity connection. The precise work depends on the scopes shown on its current NERS registration.

Does ADDCharge Energy deliver both 11kV and 33kV connections?

Yes. ADDCharge Energy supports both 11kV and 33kV grid connections. The correct voltage is established through the network connection offer and coordinated design rather than a one-size-fits-all megawatt threshold.

Can ADDCharge Energy support generation, solar or battery storage connections?

Yes. The supplied connection scope includes generation and export connections, solar PV, battery energy storage systems and co-located generation and storage projects, alongside new demand and capacity upgrades.

How much does an 11kV or 33kV grid connection cost?

There is no standard price. Cost depends on network capacity, point of connection, cable distance, reinforcement, plant, civils, land rights, DNO works, IDNO adoption terms and site constraints.

How long does an 11kV or 33kV connection take?

Timescales depend on network capacity, point of connection, approvals, land rights, equipment lead times, construction and the DNO’s non-contestable works.
