Full depot electrification at Arriva’s Palmer’s Green bus depot

ADDCharge installed 50 EV chargers at Arriva’s Palmer’s Green bus depot – 25 indoors, 25 externally – including a freestanding 45-metre steel gantry to carry overhead charger reels inside the depot, delivering the full electrical, civil, and structural steel scope for Zenobe in 26 weeks.

Zenobe
Location Palmer’s Green, London
Sector Bus & Coaches
Value ~£1.16m
Duration 26 weeks on site; approximately 6-8 months inception to handover
Scope Structural steel gantry design and installation, electrical engineering and installation, civil works, indoor and outdoor charger installation, project management

Palmer’s Green depot needed EV chargers both indoors and outside. Bus depots are designed to maximise vehicle capacity – buses sit 750 millimetres apart, nose to nose and side to side, with barely enough room to move between them. Space is at a premium before a single cable is laid or a single charger is mounted.

The Challenge

The indoor installation presented an immediate structural problem. The depot roof was not built to carry the weight of overhead EV charger reels – older depot roofs were never designed with electrification in mind. ADDCharge designed and built a freestanding 45-metre steel gantry to span the full width of the indoor depot, supporting 20 charger reels from the ground up. A further 25 chargers were installed externally. Both phases ran simultaneously across the 26-week programme, with the depot operational throughout.

How we delivered it

ADDCharge designed the gantry solution in response to the structural constraints on site. The gantry is the same type used to carry signs and signals above motorways – adapted and built to span 45 metres across the interior of the depot, with 20 EV charger reels mounted overhead above the parking bays.

The full scope – structural steel, electrical engineering, civil works, and both indoor and outdoor charger installation – was delivered by ADDCharge from initial scoping through to commissioning. Palmer’s Green is part of an ongoing programme of bus depot EV installation projects ADDCharge has delivered for Zenobe across London.

What ADDCharge delivered

Electrical engineering and HV/LV installation

Civil engineering and groundworks

External EV charger installation (25 units)

Structural steel gantry design and installation (45 metres, indoor)

Indoor EV charger installation (overhead reel system, 20 units)

Full project management from initial scoping to commissioning

“We put a 45-metre overhead gantry indoors, which is quite unusual. The roof structure was old and was never built to take the weight of 20 EV charger reels – so we built the structure from the ground up instead.”
