Civil engineering and groundworks for EV charging

Specialist civil engineering and groundworks for EV charging depots and fleet facilities across the UK. Trenching, foundations, hardstanding, and structures, coordinated with electrical installation under one team

The foundation of every EV charging infrastructure project

Civil engineering is the foundation of every successful EV charging project. While electrical infrastructure often takes centre stage, it is the quality of the civil engineering and groundworks that determines whether an EV charging depot is safe, durable, scalable, and delivered on programme. At ADDCharge, we deliver civil engineering groundworks for EV charging depots as an integrated part of our EV infrastructure solution.

Our civil works are purpose-designed for high-power EV environments, where heavy vehicle loads, complex service routes, and live operational constraints demand a specialist approach. Whether you are planning an EV charging depot, fleet facility, or public charging hub, ADDCharge delivers civil engineering as an integrated part of the wider infrastructure solution.

CASE STUDY

Major UK bus or HGV EV installation project, delivered via Zenobe

100 EV chargers across 95 per cent of Arriva’s Croydon depot, electrified in a single phase and delivered as principal contractor for Zenobe in 26 weeks.

Services we offer

Groundworks: trenching, ducting and service routes

We deliver all groundworks required to support EV charging infrastructure, including excavation, trenching, duct installation, and service routes for HV, LV, data, and ancillary services.

EV charging projects frequently involve congested ground conditions, unknown buried services, variable ground layers, and restricted access. Our teams are experienced in managing:

  • Shared and congested service corridors
  • Live sites with continued vehicle or pedestrian movement
  • Existing hardstanding and legacy infrastructure
  • Difficult ground conditions and seasonal weather impacts

All trenching and ducting for EV depots is carefully coordinated with electrical design to ensure correct depths, separation distances, and future capacity for expansion.

Foundations and hardstanding

ADDCharge designs and installs all EV charging foundations, including reinforced concrete bases for chargers, transformers, kiosks, and feeder pillars. We construct durable hardstanding capable of supporting repeated HGV and fleet vehicle movements, ensuring long-term performance under heavy loads.

Our foundation works include:

  • Concrete plinths for rapid and ultra-rapid chargers
  • Reinforced bases for substations and electrical plant
  • External hardstanding for fleet depots and private charging sites
  • Drainage solutions to manage surface water and protect assets

Each installation is engineered for the operational life of the site, not just initial deployment.

Buildings, enclosures and equipment compounds

Where required, we deliver complete civil construction for substation buildings, plant rooms, and equipment compounds. This includes slabs, walls, enclosures, fencing, and secure access arrangements, designed to meet planning, safety, and adoption requirements.

We regularly manage projects where planning constraints, visual impact concerns, or land ownership boundaries require bespoke civil solutions to house electrical equipment discreetly and safely.

Structural steelwork

Our civil scope also includes structural steel installations. For complex or bespoke steel requirements, including overhead gantries and cable-reel systems, see our dedicated structural steel works page.

Standards and credentials

ADDCharge’s structural steel works enable EV charging sites to operate safely, efficiently, and at scale. Whether supporting cable reel chargers, suspended systems, or future high-power charging technologies, our bespoke steel solutions are engineered for today’s demands and tomorrow’s growth.
